All work and no New Things makes Jack a dull boy

the danger of “not paying attention to what is actually happening in your own life'“ is that the good and interesting experiences blends into the drab (and horrible), and existence seems duller and shittier than it actually is.

so, we must be diligent in our appreciation of New Things, such as:

The Great Mental Models

The Great Mental Models Volume 1: General Thinking Concepts, by Shane Parrish - click image to read more about book

Easy to read, but lingers to nudge my thinking into new patterns. Feels like a nice scrub down of cognitive tracks.

23 days of no new things

New things are only new things if they feel like new things.

Many things, such as stuff at work and stuff at home and stuff happening in the world, might not be “good things”, but still be (in fact almost certainly will be) novel experiences that could be explored and appreciated for their newness. But if they drain more energy then they give, we don’t count them as new things, just more stuff, and that’s OK. Sometimes we need to just deal with the stuff and take comfort in old and reliable things that carries us through such times.

Mars

Somewhere on Mars -click image to see video created from 1.8 billion pixels of panorama

I agree that it is stupid to spend billions driving a remote truck around on another planet, especially when we have so many unsolved problems on our own planet. I also find it incredible and inspiring to see these detailed images from another planet. strange how that works.

New book: Hummingbird Salamander

Hummingbird Salamander

Hummingbird Salamander by Jeff VanderMeer - click image to read more about book

The Southern Reach Trilogy was exciting and adventurous.
Borne was funny and touching.
Dead Astronauts was difficult and almost boring in its obscurity.
Hummingbird Salamander is like falling through a tunnel filled with very recognizable but completely incomprehensible stuff you bounce off. It’s unpleasant and confusing, but also interesting and not something you often experience.
